Federal workers at risk in Kansas City as shutdown looms

Michele McNally is the recording secretary for the American Federation of government Employees. She has worked with the Department of Labor for 28 years. McNally said shutdowns are almost imbedded in her line of work. “I’ve been through two actually shutdowns before this one, but annually we go through this and sometimes it goes down to the brink and we are sure we are not coming back the next day and then something magical happens,” McNally said. 'Total disaster': Some furloughed workers plan to hold garage sales, dip into savings to weather government shutdown - ABC News

Imelda Avila-Thomas and her husband, who both work for the federal government, suffered a "double whammy" when the government shut down, dropping the household from two incomes to none, she said. Avila-Thomas, 43, president of union local American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) 2139 and an employee at the Department of Labor, said she stopped hiring a tutor for her 12-year-old daughter, who has dyslexia, while making plans for a garage sale to sell off some possessions. The government shutdown, which entered its seventh day on Tuesday, has engendered "desperation and uncertainty," said Avila-Thomas, who lives in San Antonio, Texas. "Any day that goes by, it adds up." AFGE - NCFLL Imelda Avila-Thomas

"Our focus is getting federal workers back to their jobs and helping the American people. Think about it. Federal workers in Kansas City begin to feel pressure

“My routine is to go to work and, you know, drop Saddie (daughter) off on the way, that’s my routine, and that’s been taken from me,” Suchman said. Suchman represents local employees with the Department of Labor, an agency that saw thousands of workers sent home immediately after the shutdown began. “Nine thousand got sent home right away,” Suchman said. “And to deny those people money for something that has nothing to do with them, especially when last time they passed a law to make sure that never happened.” AFGE-NCFLL Jefferson Suchman

Bargaining Update
May 25, 2012

From Denny Demay, President NCFLL

Thought it would be helpful to send out some information regarding the contract bargaining that is going on between the NCFLL and the Department.  At the current time I can not send out copies of the items we have already agreed on.  Below is an update on where we stand as of today.

It has been a fairly intense process for bargaining a new contract with the Department.  We have completed two or the three scheduled bargaining sessions.  We had a two session in Atlanta from April 9th thru April 20th.  Our second session was in Newark, Delaware from May 6th thru May 18th.  Our last scheduled session will be at the MSHA Academy in Beckley, West Virginia from June 4th thru the 15th.

To date we have signed of on 13 different contract proposals which are now contained in a Preamble and 10 contract articles:

Preamble restored to the contract.
Article 1 Coverage and Recognition
Article 13 Disciplinary Actions
Article 19 EEO
Article 28 Telework (formerly Flexiplace)
Article 30 Dependant Care which now includes the language on Child Care Subsidy from Article 51
Article 33 Dues Deduction
Article 39 Family Leave
Article 52 Mass Transit which has language on a new pre-tax parking program which was proposed as a separate article
Article 55 Leave of Absence
New Article Harassing conduct and Workplace Violenc

When we get back together at the bargaining table we will work on reaching agreement on the three articles currently being worked on
 Articles 8, 10 and 34.

I will send out another update after we have finished our next bargaining session.
