Federal workers at risk in Kansas City as shutdown looms

Michele McNally is the recording secretary for the American Federation of government Employees. She has worked with the Department of Labor for 28 years. McNally said shutdowns are almost imbedded in her line of work. “I’ve been through two actually shutdowns before this one, but annually we go through this and sometimes it goes down to the brink and we are sure we are not coming back the next day and then something magical happens,” McNally said. 'Total disaster': Some furloughed workers plan to hold garage sales, dip into savings to weather government shutdown - ABC News

Imelda Avila-Thomas and her husband, who both work for the federal government, suffered a "double whammy" when the government shut down, dropping the household from two incomes to none, she said. Avila-Thomas, 43, president of union local American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) 2139 and an employee at the Department of Labor, said she stopped hiring a tutor for her 12-year-old daughter, who has dyslexia, while making plans for a garage sale to sell off some possessions. The government shutdown, which entered its seventh day on Tuesday, has engendered "desperation and uncertainty," said Avila-Thomas, who lives in San Antonio, Texas. "Any day that goes by, it adds up." AFGE - NCFLL Imelda Avila-Thomas

Federal workers describe personal impact of government shutdown

"Our focus is getting federal workers back to their jobs and helping the American people. Think about it. Federal workers in Kansas City begin to feel pressure

“My routine is to go to work and, you know, drop Saddie (daughter) off on the way, that’s my routine, and that’s been taken from me,” Suchman said. Suchman represents local employees with the Department of Labor, an agency that saw thousands of workers sent home immediately after the shutdown began. “Nine thousand got sent home right away,” Suchman said. “And to deny those people money for something that has nothing to do with them, especially when last time they passed a law to make sure that never happened.” AFGE-NCFLL Jefferson Suchman

Stop Holding Working Families Hostage

IMPORTANT: This information should not be downloaded using government equipment, read during duty time, or sent to others using government equipment, because it suggests action to be taken in support of and/or against legislation. Do not list your government email or government address in filling out this message, and do not use a government provided phone for this action.

We simply cannot stand by and watch Congress destroy our jobs, vital services, and our economy when giant corporations and the mega-rich still don't pay their fair share. It doesn't have to be this way.

To get their attention, we're going to make ourselves seen and heard with over 100 events across the country – from town hall meetings with Members of Congress to rallies in dozens of states like Maryland.

We've also started a petition with coalition partners on SignOn.org that already has over 257,000 signatures in favor of immediately ending sequestration – and we want you to add your name to make sure that your Representative sees it.

Join our Day of Action by signing our SignOn petition to end sequestration right now. The House of Representatives can pass a one-sentence bill that would stop Sequestration, along with its furloughs and automatic service cuts. It's time for a real solution that doesn't destroy working families.

Government employees making modest salaries cannot afford the equivalent of a 20% pay reduction. Patriotic federal workers keep our workplaces safe, our water clean, and our military equipped, and we have already sacrificed $103 billion over ten years.

Beyond that, our communities can't handle the economic devastation of Sequestration—there will be almost a million federal workers making less and spending less. You'll be struggling to make ends meet and stores will close on Main Street.

Favoring the top 2% over hardworking middle class families is bad policy for our entire country, but you can fight back right now. As a voter, you need to let your lawmakers know that you hold them accountable.

Join the growing movement to repeal sequestration and stop the furloughs by signing our petition right now. We will send your signature straight to your Representative in the House.

With your help, we can make sure that Congressional offices are bombarded by phone, fax, and in person so that they can't ignore our message.

Thank you for taking action.

J. David Cox, Sr.
President, AFGE
