Federal workers at risk in Kansas City as shutdown looms

Michele McNally is the recording secretary for the American Federation of government Employees. She has worked with the Department of Labor for 28 years. McNally said shutdowns are almost imbedded in her line of work. “I’ve been through two actually shutdowns before this one, but annually we go through this and sometimes it goes down to the brink and we are sure we are not coming back the next day and then something magical happens,” McNally said. Imelda Avila-Thomas and her husband, who both work for the federal government, suffered a "double whammy" when the government shut down, dropping the household from two incomes to none, she said. Avila-Thomas, 43, president of union local American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) 2139 and an employee at the Department of Labor, said she stopped hiring a tutor for her 12-year-old daughter, who has dyslexia, while making plans for a garage sale to sell off some possessions. “My routine is to go to work and, you know, drop Saddie (daughter) off on the way, that’s my routine, and that’s been taken from me,” Suchman said. On-line registration for AFGE's 2013 Training Summits

On-line registration has begun for AFGE’s 2013 Human Rights Training Conference, the 2nd Y.O.U.N.G. AFGE Training Summit and the very first AFGE Pride (LGBT & Allies) Training Summit
 

The Women’s and Fair Practices Departments of AFGE are hosting an exciting and diverse week of events! This year, along with the awesome Human Rights Training Conference, we will bring you the 2nd Y.O.U.N.G. AFGE Training Summit and the very 1st AFGE Pride (LGBT & Allies) Training Summit.  All three of these events will be held over the same week in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from August 17 – 23, 2013.  
 
Discounts are available for members who want to attend more than one event BUT you must submit a paper registration in order to get the discount! On-time registration for these great events ends June 28, 2013. You have two options to register: (1) find the online registration at https://www.afge.org/Index.cfm?Page=Conferences or (2) mail in, fax or email a paper registration.
 
The 2nd Annual Y.O.U.N.G. AFGE Training Summit is being held August 17 & 18. The theme for this second training summit is “Game On!”  Young activists are ready to take on the challenge of building up this union.  They are ready to be involved and this summit is designed to provide young unionists with skills to be successful AFGE leaders and activists.  
 
This year’s Summit will offer participants informative breakouts and training sessions such as Reasonable Accommodations, AFGE 101, Union/Life balance, Leadership Roundtable, Labor History, Understanding EEO, Emerging Leaders, Collective Bargaining, Organizing Young Workers and more. We will also have our signature “Happy Hour” event with drinking, networking, dancing and this year we’re throwing in some karaoke comedy relief!

The Human Rights Training Conference is being held August 19 – 22. The theme for this year’s Human Rights Training Conference is “The Battle is Not Over!” We must continue the fight for justice. This is our America and we can’t give up until equality and fairness is achieved for all!
 
The Human Rights Training Conference has always offered the best instructors, the latest information, and the cooperative environment for networking with fellow union activists. Our featured training classes will include all levels of EEO training including DC government, Collective Bargaining training, WFP Coordinator trainings, New Leaders training, Work Life Training, Diversity Training and Conflict Resolution.

The 1st Annual AFGE Pride Training Summit is being held on August 23. The theme for this training summit is “We Are One!”  AFGE lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender members and their allies will come together for a day of support, networking and education.  
 
We will offer participants information on ways to support our LGBT members and tools to educate others on best practices to encourage an inclusive and diverse membership.
